Victor Rodrigo Ruiz
Classical & Jazz Double Bass
About Victor:
Victor Rodrigo Ruiz started his musical journey at the young age of 10. While he was not a bassist then, he has had an extensive journey going through different instruments starting from guitar and finally ending with double bass. He started his journey on bass when he joined a music program in Berkeley called Young Musicians Choir and Orchestra. There he studied with bassists Megan McDevitt (Classical), Michael Shiono (Jazz), and David Horn (Classical). After he graduated from YMCO, he went to study Classical Bass Performance at San Jose State University with Bruce Moyer in 2015. While Victor is still a student at SJSU, he has branched out in his community and has had the opportunity to perform with ensembles such as the Santa Cruz Symphony, Stockton Symphony, One Found Sound, San Jose Wind Symphony, and Pocket Opera to name a few. This journey has eventually gotten him the chance to tour South America to both Uruguay and Argentina and perform in venues such as Centro Cultural Kirchner, El Teatro Colón, and Teatro Circulo.
In addition to his classical freelance work, Victor is also active in the Jazz community. Much of his style revolves around Latin Roots from Boleros, Salsas, and many other forms of world music. Recently, when he was a part of the band The New Acoustic Collective led by Jason Keiser (Guitar), he had the chance to tour from California to North Carolina to perform at the Grey Eagle in Asheville North Carolina, the Pour House Music Hall in Raleigh North Carolina, and the Raleigh Convention Center as a part of the International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA). That journey alone has given him the opportunity to meet fantastic musicians such as Jim Kerwin (Bass), Thomas Cassell (Mandolin), and Mike Mullins (Mandolin).
While Victor is very much an active musician, he also works behind the scenes in the music industry. He has been a part of many organizations in leadership roles such as a Facilities Manager with the Young Musicians Choral Orchestra and a Front House Manager for the Campbell Heritage Theater. His longest venture has been with the San Jose Youth Symphony. He started with SJYS in 2018 as a ringer and now works as an Operations Manager for the program.
